This week, Edyth Bush Institute instructor David Torre writes a guest blog post about Planned Giving. Join us September 22 & 23 for David’s workshop, Planned Giving:Gifts of a Lifetime.

I often speak with staff and board members from charitable organizations about the topic of planned giving.  Almost everyone agrees that they need to start (or enhance) a planned giving program.  Some folks want a fully-functioning planned giving program by noon but get bogged down in the details. While others are completely lost about where to begin so they throw their hands up in resignation.

Planned giving is no different than any other form of charitable giving – success is based on relationships.  Building and nurturing strong relationships with donors is vital. Strong donor relationships yield strong financial support for any size charity.  Planned giving is simply an extension of these ongoing philanthropic relationships.

Development officers do not need to know the tax code by memory to be effective.  They do not need to know the intricacies of a Charitable Lead Trust to feel comfortable asking a donor for a planned gift.

Development officers do need to master the fundamentals of fundraising: building rapport and trust, asking questions, and seeking solutions for each individual donor.  The emphasis should be on quality over quantity.

Planned giving is more than just getting larger or more complex gifts for a charity.  It is more than solving a tax or estate planning problem for a donor. Planned giving is about the joining of a donor’s legacy to the mission of the charity.  That partnership often results in an exponentially greater impact than either the donor or charity could have achieved individually.”
